So I'm late to the whole Criminal Minds phenomena.
However, while enjoying the awesome violence (and intense plot!) the fangirl in me couldn't help herself. Apparently, there is no such thing as original thought. You know how Firefox has a search engine box in the top, and sometimes Google tries to guess what you are going to type in, as you type it in? Yeah... be careful who is around you when you search.
Dr. Spencer Reid has an old-school Spock-like charm. What is incredible to me, is how the show designs him to be as unattractive as possible (clothing, mannerisms, etc), but even through the short sleeve button down shirts, weird fitting sleeveless sweaters, and almost middle-school like attachment to a messenger bag; Reid still manages to be gorgeous. He's not trying either. It's like a giraffe... in the way that his limbs are skinny and hardly seem strong, his posture can be isolating, he's not known for being socially gifted... but even with the awkwardness that is a giraffe, humans still find them beautiful. At first I thought it was his apparent vulnerability and closeness to my age (in comparison with the other main characters) that made me drawn to that character since obviously the show was trying so hard to make him unattractive from a conventional point of view. Then curiosity caught me and I looked up the show on wikipedia, and they state the actor, Matthew Gray Gubler, was a fashion model. Unbelievable, not because I didn't find him attractive personally, but because my tastes (and his exotic looks) are surely not the widely advertised accepted image of masculine beauty.
This reminds me of when I found out that Norman Reedus was a model. Again, not because I found him unattractive, but because he didn't immediately represent himself as the conventional "hottie". In fact, several people that have been unfortunate enough to hear me gush about him, are taken aback when I find a picture of him. "Scruffy," is usually the reaction I get... "like he needs to be cleaned up or go through rehab or something. "
In the same vein, I've read a few comments already that Gubler looks like the "junkie" chic trend that went on for a few years (and it still trickles through). It's funny to me because I've always been drawn to anyone (fictional characters included) who are smart and seem like they'd be a good teacher, but on the other side of this case even when a character is specifically designed to NOT be a sexual object, I still find them attractive, possible *because* of, or in spite of this aspect.
Anyway, the typical FBI agent look is portrayed by the character Aaron Hotchner, and Reid is almost an exact opposite in image. This may be the reason why if you type "Hotchner Reid" in the Google search box, you might end up with more smut and less character analysis (which is why I typed it in the first place! I swear! Don't look at me that way! Besides, you have to do research before you just jump into fanfic... not that I'll be writing fanfiction... okay. whatever.)
